Help: the icon's too big to see!
Note: this tutorial's technique applies not only to notes, but can also be used for containers, agents and adornments to reset the icon size.
It is sometimes possible to get an icon on a Map that's larger than intended and also larger than your Map view window. You can resize that window and/or zoom the window's contents and then drag-resize the icon. This tutorial addresses a situation where that isn't practical, for instance where you've dragged an image so big it doesn't fit on screen at all.
The tutorial shows how to use the Inspector to reset $Height and $Width to set a more manageable size. Colophon: Tinderbox v5.11.2 on OS 10.6.8.
Scroll the map so the top left corner can be seen
To scroll the map, use the window's scroll bars or click and drag on the map background. Beware that clicking on and dragging an icon simply moves the icon on the map background.
When resizing the icon by resetting $Height and $Width the only corner that does not move is the top left icon. Thus, to ensure the icon doesn't 'disappear' after the resize action it is important to make sure the top left corner of the icon is visible in your Map view window.
Make sure the correct icon is selected
If the note's icon is selected, you will see the resizing controls (little black squares) at the icon's corners and midway along each side.
Be aware that if you have more than one icon selected, the following steps will re-size every item in the selection.
Open the Inspector
Use Window menu -> Inspector or use shortcut [Cmd]+. On first opening the two Attribute pop-ups will show 'General' and 'Checked'. Depending on what you have been doing during the current Tinderbox session the pop-up selections may differ from the above.
Open the left Attribute pop-up and select 'Map' and then from the right, choose 'Height'.
Set the correct Inspector attribute choices
You can see the current value of $Height, under the left pop-up: 8.25 map units. You now have a choice:
- You can click the use default button (bottom-left) to set the document default $Height value of 1 map unit (note the default value is shown on the button).
- Set a custom size via the Value box and the Apply button.
For the tutorial, you will set a custom size of 2 map units.
Add the custom $Height value
Enter '2' in the Value box and click the Apply button.
The note's height is reset
Now to fix the width…
Set a new $Width value
Select 'Width' from the right pop-up. Enter a custom Value of '5', to replace the current value of 11 (shown above the Value box). Click Apply.
As with the height, you could instead have used the default value of 3 via the use default button.
The note's width is reset
An alternate method: Info view
For a single selected item only, an alternate way to do the same task is to use the note's Info view. To open the view, use Note menu, Get Info or the shortcut [Cmd]+[Opt]+[i]. Then:
- Ensure Map is selected in the top pop-up.
- Double-click the right column for the Height attribute, enter the new value and click OK.
- Scroll the list down to show Width and repeat the process.
Remember: this works on containers, etc.
Both methods described above work on any Map view icon: notes, containers, agents, adornments and picture adornments.
